The corded Zebra DS9908 combines handheld and hands-free presentation scanning in one purpose-built design. Associates can pass merchandise in front of the scanner, then pick it up to reach an item on the counter or in a cart without changing devices.
An 800 MHz microprocessor, 1280 x 800 sensor, and PRZM Intelligent Imaging capture 1D, 2D, Digimarc, and electronic barcodes. The imaging system is designed for difficult codes, including dense, damaged, crinkled, faded, distorted, low-contrast, glossy, poorly printed, and dim-display symbols.
POSGuys reviews the DS9908 hybrid design and its handheld and presentation scanning workflow.
The standard scanner-only package includes:
Configuration note: The interface cable, power supply if required, and mounting bracket are separate unless explicitly included in the selected kit.
PRZM Intelligent Imaging works with the high-resolution sensor and 800 MHz processor to improve decoding before data reaches the host. This helps the DS9908 read poorly printed, damaged, low-contrast, glossy, and distorted labels as well as electronic codes on dim displays with less rescanning.
Hands-free motion tolerance reaches 240 inches per second, allowing items to move rapidly through the scan field. A wide 48 by 30.6 degree field of view and advanced illumination make barcodes easier to acquire without exact positioning, supporting high first-pass read rates at checkout.
A capacitive touch sensor and accelerometer detect when the DS9908 is picked up and change it to handheld operation immediately. Returning it to the counter restores presentation behavior automatically, eliminating manual mode changes during mixed-item transactions.
The handle is shaped and weighted for comfortable aiming when associates need to lift the scanner repeatedly. Its compact adjustable stand gives the presentation unit a stable footprint and lets users choose a practical scan angle on space-constrained counters.
In handheld mode, a typical 13 mil UPC can be captured from contact to about 24.7 inches away. Hands-free UPC range is intentionally limited to about 9.5 inches to help prevent the scanner from reading an unintended nearby item when it is resting on the counter.
Good-decode LEDs, an adjustable beeper, and Direct Decode Indicator provide visible and audible confirmation. Direct Decode Indicator projects illumination on the barcode itself after a successful read, which is useful when ambient noise makes the beeper harder to hear.
A single-board design reduces internal connection points, while double-sealed optics and a recessed scan window protect the imaging system from dust, spills, smudges, and scratches. Elevated electronics add protection when liquid reaches the counter around the scanner.
The DS9908 is IP52 sealed and designed for multiple 5-foot drops to concrete plus 2,000 tumbles in a 1.5-foot tumbler. This construction supports busy retail POS, coupon and loyalty, age-verification, and service workflows where the scanner may be picked up frequently.
Configurations with Checkpoint Electronic Article Surveillance support can deactivate a compatible tag while the item is scanned. Availability depends on the selected DS9908 configuration and the surrounding EAS system, so this capability should be confirmed when ordering.
Intelligent Document Capture can photograph checks and full-page documents, correct lighting, square the image, and send a more usable result to the host. The DS9908 exports BMP, JPEG, or TIFF images and supports OCR for text on documents such as passports and identification cards.
OCR support transmits text from passports, identification cards, and other documents to the host application, reducing manual entry.
Multi-Code Data Formatting can capture several barcodes with one trigger pull, then transmit only the data the application needs in the specified order.
ScanSpeed Analytics records performance information for each barcode and reports how much of the shift is spent in handheld versus presentation mode. That evidence can help managers distinguish a poor label from scanner or workflow problems and identify opportunities to improve lane processes.
The 1280 x 800 sensor supports minimum resolutions down to 3 mil for Code 39 and Code 128 when configured appropriately, and 6 mil for DataMatrix and QR. With 16% minimum print contrast and broad pitch, skew, and roll tolerance, the DS9908 is equipped for a wide range of retail and service-counter labels.
Preferred Symbol can identify and output one preferred barcode when several symbols fall in the field of view, reducing manual covering or re-aiming.
The scanner is preconfigured for common applications, and auto-host detect cables select the appropriate interface when connected. USB, RS232, Keyboard Wedge, and TGCS (IBM) 46XX connectivity plus support for nearly 100 international keyboards fit a broad range of POS environments.
The DS9908 is backward compatible with DS9808 cables and power supplies. Organizations replacing earlier hybrid imagers may be able to retain installed accessories and simplify rollout, subject to the requirements of the chosen configuration.
123Scan handles parameters, firmware updates, data viewing, and reports, while Scanner Management Service provides remote management and asset queries.
Zebra Scanner SDKs for Windows, Android, iOS, and Linux support custom application integration across common host platforms.
