The Zebra DS8288 is the cordless DS82 Series scanner for high-volume point of sale, self-checkout, returns, loyalty, inventory, receiving and mobile work around the checkout. Zebra positions it as the cordless replacement for the DS8178, adding a 2 MP optical system, capacitive multi-function button, Bluetooth 5.2 and contactless charging.
PRZM Intelligent Imaging captures 1D codes, 2D symbols, GS1 Digital Link, Digimarc and OCR data with speed and accuracy. The standard DS8288 is a barcode model; integrated RFID belongs only to the separate DS8288-R configuration and is not claimed for this page.
Meet the Zebra DS8288 as part of the future-ready DS82 Series.
Zebra's current U.S. package listing includes:
Configuration note: Package contents may vary with the purchased configuration.
PRZM Intelligent Imaging and the 2 MP optical system decode challenging barcodes with high speed, precision and motion tolerance. In optimized mode the scanner handles 13 mil UPC movement up to 160 inches per second handheld and 40 inches per second hands-free.
One trigger pull captures conventional 1D UPC and emerging 2D GS1 Digital Link codes. The scanner also supports common 2D symbologies, Digimarc, OCR-A, OCR-B, MICR and US currency recognition for broader workflows.
The working range reaches about 28 inches for 13 mil UPC and 19 inches for 20 mil QR Code. Associates can scan merchandise at the bottom of a cart while remaining at the lane or service point.
The haptic multi-function button acts as a secondary trigger that can be assigned to a task such as switching between point-of-sale and returns applications. It gives mobile associates a direct workflow control without another device or screen step.
The 2 MP sensor can support third-party vision applications for real-time item recognition and verification. These applications can streamline transactions and help address self-checkout exceptions and shrink as vision workflows mature.
The scanner and cradle charge without exposed electrical contacts. This design is easier to clean, eliminates contact maintenance and reduces wear that can shorten device and cradle life.
The 3,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery and 1,000 F Li-ion PowerCap are interchangeable. A fleet can change power strategy later without purchasing a different scanner body.
At the faster simulated profile, PowerPrecision+ provides up to 100,000 scans; at ten scans per minute it provides 65,000 scans and up to 108 hours of operation. The distinction matters because actual runtime depends on scan rate and workflow.
An empty battery can reach readiness for a 14-hour shift in 90 minutes over standard USB or 25 minutes with an external 5 V source or USB-C. Full charge takes about 13 hours over standard USB or 3.5 hours with the faster sources.
At 60 scans per minute the PowerCap provides up to 6,000 scans; at ten scans per minute it provides 4,000 scans and about 6.7 hours. It is suited to workflows where scanners return to a cradle often and fast top-offs are more valuable than multi-day runtime.
Full PowerCap charging takes about 60 minutes over standard USB, 15 minutes over BC1.2 USB, 13 minutes from external 5 V or 12 V power, or 14 minutes over USB-C. Zebra also cites readiness for 100 scans after about 35 seconds in the cradle.
The battery indicator shows charge before a shift begins, while PowerPrecision+ management tools report battery health. Supervisors can replace aging power packs before they interrupt transactions.
IP52 sealing protects against dust and spills, while a recessed scan window helps resist smudges, scratches and dirt. The scanner meets a 10-foot MIL drop specification, is designed for 54 drops at 6 feet and survives 2,000 tumbles.
Infrared sensing activates the two warm-white illumination LEDs only when an object is detected in presentation mode. Hands-free users avoid constant bright light, and the workstation consumes less power when no item is present.
Virtual Tether alerts on both scanner and cradle if the DS8288 goes out of range or remains away from the cradle too long. The cradle's paging button helps staff locate a misplaced device before it disrupts a lane or inventory task.
IoT Connector automates real-time scanner data collection and routes it to a selected IoT endpoint. Operations teams can analyze fleet health, use and performance without building a separate collection layer.
Zebra DNA combines firmware, applications and utilities for deployment, management, visibility and optimization. 123Scan simplifies configuration and rollout, while remote-management and analytics tools help keep a distributed fleet current and available.
Direct Decode Indicator, front and rear LEDs, adjustable audio, haptic decode feedback, button haptics and the battery gauge provide several status channels. Workers can confirm captures and power state in noisy, quiet or visually busy environments.
FIPS 140-3 certification supports deployments with defined security requirements. Compatibility with Checkpoint EAS deactivation can coordinate barcode capture and loss-prevention activity at checkout.
The DS8288 exports Bitmap, JPEG and TIFF images and delivers 140 PPI on an 11 x 8.5-inch document captured from 11.8 inches away. This extends the device beyond barcode decoding when an application needs document or image evidence.
The optical system resolves Code 39 and Code 128 down to 3 mil and Data Matrix and QR Code down to 5 mil. The achievable range remains dependent on symbol size, print quality, contrast and ambient light.
Bluetooth 5.2 BLE supports Serial Port and HID profiles, Class 1 range to 330 feet and Class 2 range to 33 feet. Adjustable output lets a deployment reduce radio reach when a smaller lane or department footprint is preferable.
Standard/desktop and presentation cradles, spare batteries, spare PowerCaps and document stands support different deployments. Charging speed depends on the selected cradle connection and power source.
Retail uses include POS, self-checkout, BOPIS/BOPAC, loyalty and coupon redemption, backroom receiving, real-time item inventory and loss prevention. The same barcode model supports hospitality check-in and ticketing, transportation shipping, picking and tracking, plus light-manufacturing product tracking, WIP and process control.
This page covers the standard cordless DS8288 with a three-year warranty. RFID is limited to DS8288-R models, and healthcare cleaning, housing and antimicrobial claims belong to DS8288-HC rather than this general-purpose unit.
