The Zebra DS8178 is the cordless DS8100 Series handheld imager for fast 1D and 2D capture at staffed checkout, self-checkout, curbside and in-store pickup, customer service, receiving and inventory. An 800 MHz processor, a 1,280 x 960 image sensor and Zebra PRZM Intelligent Imaging help it read difficult printed and electronic barcodes on the first pass.
Bluetooth 4.0 with BLE frees workers from the workstation, while interchangeable PowerPrecision+ battery and PowerCap options let a business choose extended runtime or fast cradle top-offs. Zebra DataCapture DNA adds workflow automation, analytics, configuration, diagnostics and development tools across the scanner lifecycle.

Unprecedented Performance
A high-resolution sensor, fast processor and PRZM algorithms capture dense, damaged, dirty, faded and poorly printed barcodes plus mobile codes on dim displays. The bright circular aimer and range to 24 inches on 100% UPC help reach items at the bottom of a cart.
Direct Decode Indicator flashes on the decoded symbol for immediate visual confirmation. IP52 sealing, multiple 6-foot drops and 2,000 tumbles protect a scanner that moves between lanes, receiving and inventory.
Choose Battery or PowerCap
The interchangeable 2,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery delivers up to 65,000 scans and reports health metrics; the 440 F PowerCap provides up to 2,000 scans for workflows that return the scanner to its cradle often. The PowerCap can ready 100 scans in about 35 seconds after a low-charge warning and fully charges over USB in about 30 minutes.
The power gauge shows shift readiness, while Connect+ supports durable cradle charging contacts.
Workflow Intelligence
Virtual Tether and the cradle paging button help prevent misplaced scanners. Wi-Fi Friendly Mode limits Bluetooth interference. Label Parse+ structures GS1 fields, and Multi-Code Data Formatting captures several symbols with one trigger pull. DL configurations add driver-license parsing; Digimarc support applies to compatible configurations.
Adapt and Manage
AutoConfig stores settings in the cradle so a scanner can move among checkout, customer service, inventory and receiving without manual reconfiguration. ScanSpeed Analytics exposes poorly performing labels. 123Scan configures parameters and firmware, Scanner Management Service updates distributed devices, and Zebra SDKs support Windows, Android, iOS and Linux applications.
Interfaces and Imaging
Cradles support USB, RS232, Keyboard Wedge and TGCS (IBM) 46XX over RS485 plus more than 90 keyboards. Bluetooth 4.0 BLE reaches up to 330 feet Class 1 or 33 feet Class 2. The imager resolves 3 mil Code 39/128, 5 mil PDF417 and 6 mil Data Matrix/QR Code and exports Bitmap, JPEG or TIFF images.
Applications
