The Zebra DS8108 is the corded model in the DS8100 Series, built for rapid 1D and 2D capture at staffed checkout, self-checkout, curbside and in-store pickup, receiving, inventory and other high-volume workflows. It combines an 800 MHz microprocessor, a 1,280 x 960 image sensor and Zebra PRZM Intelligent Imaging to read difficult printed and electronic barcodes on the first pass.
Because the DS8108 draws power from its host instead of using the DS8178's battery or PowerCap, it is the right fit for fixed workstations that need continuous operation without cordless charging. Zebra DataCapture DNA adds configuration, analytics, remote-management and development tools across the scanner lifecycle.
See the DS8100 Series in this POSGuys product review.
The standard scanner-only package includes:
Configuration note: The interface cable, power supply if required, IntelliStand, and document stand are separate unless explicitly included.
The processor, high-resolution sensor and PRZM algorithms work together to capture dense, poorly printed, crinkled, faded, distorted, dirty and damaged barcodes. They also read electronic barcodes on dimly lit displays, reducing rescans and keeping transactions moving.
A bright circular aiming spot and range of up to 24 inches on 100% UPC make the target easy to see and reach. Cashiers can scan merchandise at the bottom of a cart without leaving the cash wrap.
The imager resolves Code 39 and Code 128 elements down to 3 mil, PDF417 to 5 mil, and Data Matrix and QR Code to 6 mil. Its 60-degree skew and pitch tolerance plus full 360-degree roll tolerance reduce careful barcode alignment.
Label Parse+ captures and parses GS1 label information such as expiration date, lot number and manufacturing location. Associates can collect structured inventory data in one scan instead of entering each field manually.
Multi-Code Data Formatting captures several barcodes in one trigger pull and transmits only the required codes in the order an application expects. This shortens workflows that would otherwise require multiple scans and software-side cleanup.
Driver-license parsing is available only on DL configurations and can populate loyalty or credit applications or support age verification.
Digimarc digital-watermark support helps compatible configurations accelerate staffed and self-checkout scanning.
The illumination flashes directly on the barcode after a successful decode. Associates receive immediate visual confirmation without pausing to check a display or listen for the adjustable beeper.
ScanSpeed Analytics records detailed performance metrics for every captured barcode. Operations teams can identify and correct slow, poorly performing labels instead of treating delays as a scanner problem.
123Scan creates configuration barcodes, changes parameters, upgrades firmware and reports scan statistics and asset data. Scanner Management Service can configure and update host-connected scanners across distributed locations without depot staging or local user action.
The logging agent records asset details, health and statistics, configuration settings and barcode data. That evidence supports event verification, traceability, pilot ROI analysis, troubleshooting and predictive fleet trend analysis.
Zebra SDKs provide drivers, test utilities, documentation and sample code for Windows, Android, iOS and Linux. Development teams can add scanning to business applications without building the device layer from scratch.
Certified USB, RS232, Keyboard Wedge and TGCS connectivity plus support for more than 90 keyboards simplify integration with established checkout systems. Zebra lists applications across retail, hospitality, transportation and logistics, light manufacturing, government and banking, but cordless-only DS8178 capabilities such as Bluetooth, AutoConfig, Virtual Tether and swappable power do not apply to this DS8108.
The DS8108 can export images as Bitmap, JPEG or TIFF and provides 109 PPI on an A4 document. These imaging capabilities extend the scanner beyond decoding when a workflow needs a captured document or supporting image.
IP52 sealing helps protect against dust and spills, while the scanner is designed for multiple 6-foot drops and 2,000 tumbles. It operates from 32° to 122° F and tolerates ambient light up to 96,840 lux for indoor and bright-work-area use.
